NVSU hosts ASCU-SN course book workshop

In constant solidarity with its co-members in the Association of State Colleges and Universities (ASCU)- Solid North (SN), the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) hosted for the second time the “Workshop on ASCU-SN General Education (GE) Workbooks”  on June 9, 2009 at the NVSU-Dumlao Farmer’s Training Center (DFTC).

Providing the justification for the endeavor, the NVSU President, and Director for the Project, Dr. Marilou S. Gilo-Abon, maintained that the venture of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Solid North in coming up with a set of course books is one more swift and sure step towards quality education and excellent service.

As she flips through pages of the output Course book on Speech Communication, Dr. Zenaida Astudillo from the Abra State Institute of Science And Technology (ASIST), commends the ASCU-SN for unprecedented efforts in the General Education Program. Flanking her are the participants in the “Workshop on ASCU-SN Workbooks” on June 9 at the NVSU-DFTC.

In affirmation, Dr. Lauro B. Tacbas, President of the University of Northern Philippines (UNP), as well as the ASCU-SN and the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) commended the participating universities and colleges for a feat never before tried by other networks of higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country.

Keen on streamlining the General Education (GE) Program, the ASCU-SN launched the workshop to ensure that most of the nearly 20 course books, duly presented by the Discipline Chairs during the event, will be available for use upon the opening of classes on June 15.

Dr. Jimmy Soria (leftmost), VP for Academic Affairs of the UNP, signs the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), with Dr. Marilou Gilo-Abon, NVSU President, after co-signatories, Mr. Noel Canlas, Associate Publisher for Trinitas Publishing, Dr. Lauro Tacbas, President of UNP, ASCU-SN and PASUC, Dr. Roberto Tubaña (hidden), President of ASIST, and Dr. Rafael Querubin, President of the ISPSC.

Said course books are clustered by discipline like Languages and Speech Communication, Math and Natural Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, and other Mandated Subjects, and are anticipated to facilitate and enrich teaching and learning in the GE program. The books are to be circulated among ASCU-SN HEIs, yet prospects of extending the use of said books beyond the circle was expressed.

Dr. Lauro Tacbas, UNP President, gives a challenging message to the ASCU-SN body to perform beyond expectations in pursuit of quality education.

United for a common cause, the representatives of the HEIs all the way from the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), sealed the gathering by signing Memoranda of Agreement (MOA). Side by side the Presidents of prestigious institutions, like Dr. Rafael Querubin of the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), Dr. Roberto Tubaña of the Abra State Institute of Science And Technology (ASIST), and UNP Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Head of the ASCU-SN Course book Discipline Chairs, Dr. Jimmy Soria, among other  important officials, the Trinitas Publishing Associate Publisher, Mr. Noel F. Canlas also occupied a key role during the MOA signing.
