Celebrating Indigenous Cultural Heritage and Indigenous People's Rights in Nueva Vizcaya State University

In commemoration of the 26th Indigenous People's Rights Act (IPRA) and in celebration of the 2023 IP Month, the Nueva Vizcaya State University Office of Culture and Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities Department organized a vibrant program in front of the Old Administration building on October 27, 2023. With the theme "Pagpapayaman ng Pamanang Kultural at Katutubong Yaman Tungo sa mas Maliwanag na Kinabukasan para sa Bagong Pilipinas" (Enriching Cultural Heritage and Indigenous Wealth Towards a Brighter Future for the New Philippines), the event aimed to honor and promote the cultural heritage of the indigenous communities in the region.

The program commenced with a captivating performance titled "Mundadammo" led by the talented Ayug ken Tignay Performers. Through mesmerizing dances and enchanting songs, they showcased the rich diversity and significance of indigenous cultural expressions. The community dance and singing served as a powerful reminder of the deep-rooted traditions that contribute to the cultural identity of the indigenous peoples.

Following this, a symbolic ritual called "Owag para sun PWAD" was conducted as a gesture of respect and recognition for President Wilfredo A. Dumale Jr., who holds the esteemed position as the university's president. This ritual acknowledged his role in supporting and upholding the rights and welfare of the indigenous communities within the institution.

After a short break, the Northern Campus Supreme Student Council organized an indigenous game called "A'AHHIL." Indigenous community students enthusiastically participated in this traditional game, showcasing their skills, agility, and camaraderie. As part of the festivities, a special event named "WATWAT" took place during lunchtime. "Watwat" refers to a delectable portion of boiled meat cooked over firewood, symbolizing the shared meals and communal spirit that binds the indigenous communities together.

In the afternoon, the "Bugan Ya Wigan" segment captivated the audience as indigenous individuals and groups proudly presented their traditional clothing. These garments, adorned with intricate weavings, vibrant colors, and symbolic patterns, served as living representations of the indigenous people's identities and their profound connection to their ancestral roots. The display highlighted the artistic prowess and cultural pride of the indigenous communities in Nueva Vizcaya.

Another integral part of the program was the "Sarita" held on the second floor of the NVSU Library building. Representatives from different Local Government Units, the Provincial IPMR Office, NCIP, and Tourism and Eco-Tourism students actively participated in this engaging discussion. The "Sarita" aimed to strengthen advocacy for the rights of indigenous peoples and foster their active involvement in the preservation of cultural heritage.

To culminate the program, prizes were awarded to the winners of the contested activities, known as "Panangited." This recognition served as a testament to the participants' dedication, skills, and commitment in upholding the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous communities.

The event at Nueva Vizcaya State University served as a platform to celebrate and honor the indigenous cultural heritage of the region. By promoting awareness, understanding, and respect for the indigenous peoples' rights and traditions, the program aimed to contribute to a brighter future for a new Philippines that cherishes its diverse cultural tapestry.
